Raising the Standards of Lettings Agents in Scotland

Northwood Lettings Aberdeen were pleased to be in attendance at the annual letting agent conference, hosted by the Council of Lettings Agents Scotland, the largest professional association of Scotland’s leading letting agents.

As ever it was a full day of informative information and experiences of landlord and letting agents throughout Scotland.

Insights from the Annual Letting Agent Conference:

  • Updates on pension auto-enrollment
  • Guest speaker from Landlord Action Paul Shamplina as seen on BBC and Channel 5
  • Diversifying your business, Amanda Wiewiorka, chair of the CLA
  • Property market analyst by guest speaker Kate Faulkner
  • Updates for the sector from the Scottish government
  • Thomas Ashdown’s views on the market from Citylets
  • Accounts and tax update from David Morrison EQ Accountants
  • Legal update from TC Young on the future of the sector

A key development for us as agents is the introduction of letting agent regulation which includes: mandatory registration and training of all letting agents, a scheme for monitoring compliance and enforcement, a complaints regime and a code of practice.

New Qualification Program for Letting Agents in Scotland

In line with this one of the most exciting updates we received was the launch of the Letwell professional development programme for letting agents in Scotland.

This programme links LAS, (Landlord Accreditation Scotland), the training body of the Scottish association of landlords with CIH (Chartered Institute of Housing) to create the founding basis of the new qualification that the Scottish Government will require all letting agents to have in the near future.

The programme has been set up to coincide with the roll out of new Scottish regulations which will soon make it a criminal offence to carry out letting agency work without appropriate registration.

Northwood Aberdeen as a member of SAL and the CLA having enjoyed  and undergone the training provided by LAS welcome this new programme and look forward to a time that will raise the standard for all agents that operate in the sector, providing a safe and professionally recognised industry for all involved.

Northwood Aberdeen look forward to receiving and being involved in further updates on this new program for the sector.

For more information or to discuss what this means for your property whether you are a landlord or a tenant get in touch today to speak with one of the team.
