Be a good neighbour this New Year

December 28, 2016

Now that the Christmas Day festivities have passed, attention turns to New Year celebrations. Whether you plan to have family and friends over for a low key evening, or you’re having a full-on party, don’t forget to spare a thought for your neighbours.

According to recent research by Co-op Insurance, loud music tops the list of causes for festive fury between neighbours with 68% of those asked finding it annoying. So if you’re planning a party, it’s a good idea to have a quick chat with the neighbours, let them know what your plans are and perhaps agree a time for the music to end or be turned down. Of course, you could always just invite them along! If you are a tenant, you’ll want to be extra careful as any form of behaviour that could be deemed a nuisance could in fact put you in breach of your tenancy agreement.

The Christmas season is a time for getting together and spending time with family and friends, so you will more than likely have a few visitors over the festive period. Try and make sure all those visiting you are considerate about where they park, as this ranks number 2 on the list of ‘Bad Neighbour’ traits.

Top 10 traits of a bad neighbour at Christmas

1              Loud music or television                                                    68%

2              Inconsiderate parking                                                        65%

3              Barking dogs                                                                             62%

4              Outdoor loud parties                                                           57%

5              Bad language in or outside of the house                 55%

6              Unsupervised children                                                      53%

7              Slamming doors                                                                     33%

8              Neighbours pets roaming about your garden     31%

9              Bonfires, BBQ, chimenea smoke                                  28%

10           Ignoring your neighbours                                                27%

Other terrible traits that make for bad neighbours included dogs left to bark all day, loud outdoor parties and slamming doors. While a bit of noise is clearly unavoidable at times, especially if you have pets and children, being considerate of your neighbours, especially if you are in a semi-detached or terraced property, will go a long way to ensuring a happy Christmas is had by all!

Also making the list, was ignoring your neighbours. As it ‘tis the Season of Goodwill, why not make a bit of extra effort and wish your neighbours a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
