5 tips on keeping your property secure this summer

Based on the weather of the last few days it’s time (perhaps temporarily) to celebrate the arrival of the Great British Summer. Unfortunately, as the temperatures are set to increase, so is the likelihood of a burglary. The warmer weather encourages us to leave our windows open and doors unlocked whilst we sit in the garden enjoying the sunshine. To secure your property and belongings, there a few things you can do to make your property a less appealing target for thieves. So whether home or away, follow these tips to keep your property safe this summer.

If you’re not there, Lock it!

According to figures, 30% of all burglaries are by way of an unlocked door and 26% via an unlocked or open window. You’re unlikely to hear or see a burglar coming in through a front door or window while in the back garden. Keep the front door and any windows locked! Also ensure all windows and doors are locked if you pop out, seems obvious, but it can be tempting to leave them open when its hot!

Get an Alarm

Alarms and CCTV systems are a fantastic way to put burglars off! They do not want be seen or heard. According to statistics on www.homesecuritymonth.com/ 60% of all burglaries attempted on properties with alarms fitted, fail.

Avoid the Post Pile-Up

If you are going away for your summer holiday, the post piling up behind the front door is a dead giveaway that nobody is home. Get a trusted neighbour to pop in and collect it for you, or use the ‘Keepsafe’ service offered by Royal Mail where for a small fee, they keep your post for you and deliver it when you return.

No Social Media Check-In

As excited as you may be about going holiday, be aware of who may be checking your updates. According to a survey by Friedland, more than 75% of convicted burglars believe that current thieves use social media to look for potential targets.

Don’t Forget the Small Stuff

It’s also worth a mention to keep small valuables out of sight, especially near windows, a thief can have those away in seconds!  Remember too, that car keys are easily hooked through slightly open windows, letterboxes and cat flaps, so make sure yours are kept out of sight.

With the windows and doors locked and valuables out of sight, time to fill the paddling pool, kick back, relax and enjoy your summer!
