Welcome to Liverpool
Liverpool is a city full of culture and heritage, having celebrated its 800th anniversary in 2007 and the European Capital of Culture in 2008. It is a city with unique attractions and renowned for its world class sport, music, buildings, museums and galleries.
Famously, it is the home of two Premier League football clubs, Liverpool and Everton. Support for the two sides, particularly at the Merseyside derby, is said to divide the City, communities and even families, such is the passion for the two teams. The world famous Grand National also takes places annually at Aintree Racecourse on the outskirts of the city and attracts a worldwide audience of approximately 10 million people.
The city boasts an unrivalled musical heritage and the popularity of The Beatles, and other groups from the Merseybeat era and later, has put Liverpool firmly on the map as a tourist destination for music lovers.
Several areas of Liverpool city centre have been granted World Heritage Site status by UNESCO in 2004. The Liverpool Maritime Mercantile City includes the Pier Head, Albert Dock, and William Brown Street. With the largest collection of museums and galleries anywhere outside of the Capital, Liverpool’s culture and heritage are at the very heart of the city.

West Derby is an ancient settlement which is mentioned in the Domesday Book. West Derby achieved significance far earlier than Liverpool itself; it was the main administrative area for the Norman Conquests and was the largest area within the West Derby Hundred which covered most of south west Lancashire. West Derby once had a Motte and Bailey castle, now completely disappeared and there is also some suggestion of a Roman site on a plot now known as Castlesite. The remnants of a wooden castle were unearthed on this plot during excavations in the mid 1930s.
There still remains a courthouse built in 1586, which is the only freestanding post-medieval courthouse in Britain. Opposite the courthouse is a set of Victorian cast iron stocks. The area was home to the Earls of Sefton (family name Molyneux), whose house, Croxteth Hall, and the surrounding countryside estate now forms Croxteth Park, an attractive public space
West Derby has always been and remains a sought after dwelling place. Steeped in history and with an abundance of public space, as referred above, there are lots of other appealing features which make West Derby such a sought after location, one such notable feature being the excellent schooling.
Secondary schools in the area include West Derby School, St. Edward's College, Cardinal Heenan Catholic High School, Broughton Hall High School and Holly Lodge Girls' College. Primary schools in the area include St. Marys Primary School, St. Paul's Junior School, Blackmoor Park Junior School and Emmaus Primary School.
Alder Hey Children's Hospital is located on the south side of West Derby, at Eaton Road and there is a good variety of pubs, restaurants and other eateries in the centre of the village.
West Derby is also well placed to enjoy excellent transportation links to the City and easy access to the motorway network.
