Key things to know about living in Barnstaple
It's hard not to appreciate the fresh area, stunning coastline and great beaches of North Devon.
Barnstaple, North Devon's regional centre sits on the banks of the Rivers Taw and Yeo and houses the area's main business, commercial, leisure and shopping venues. Today it has a wonderful mixture of Victorian, Medieval and Georgian architecture and is proud to be a multiple winner of Britain in Bloom. The town is well known for its range of outlets including all of the high street favourites, as well as a diverse selection of local stores. The Pannier Market dates back to Saxon times and trades in foodstuffs, general goods, local crafts and collectables. The North Devon Leisure Centre provides many indoor pursuits along with the Tarka Tennis Centre, both based in Barnstaple. Live theatres are accessible at Barnstaple and Ilfracombe, whilst other sporting and leisure pursuits are close at hand, including golf at Landkey, Ilfracombe, Saunton, Torrington and Westward Ho!. North Devon's rugged coastline including the popular resorts of Appledore, Croyde, Instow and Woolacombe are all within a half an hours drive, as is Exmoor. Using the old railways of North Devon, the Tarka Trail is available to cyclists between Braunton and Meeth being over 30 miles long with information boards and interpretation along the Trail where you can find out about the history and wildlife of the Trail and the places it passes through.
Aside from the fact that the locals are a really friendly bunch, the lifestyle of the area really can't be beaten.
