Self-Care Tips For Staying At Home

There is no denying that lockdown has been tough on all of us. But now that we’re in week 11 of lockdown, many of us are starting to feel the effects of being stuck inside for so long. Even with a daily walk or a weekly shopping trip, feeling uneasy, anxious or just a bit off-kilter has become the norm. Even with the relaxed rules around seeing family and friends, it can feel strange, not being able to embrace or socialise as you would normally. During such strange times, it’s never been more important to take care of yourself properly – physically, mentally and emotionally. If you don’t, you may struggle to continue in lockdown for as long as it goes on. So instead of seeing it as isolation, see it as ‘self-retreating’, and give yourself some time to hibernate, disconnect and explore the world of self-care. Not sure where to start? Cut Down on Screen Time

When there is so much going on in the world it’s all too easy for us to spend hours staring at the screen, sucked into a news cycle that brings more and more negativity every day. And that can have a pretty negative effect on your emotions, making it harder to think positively or deal with stress. So give yourself permission for a digital detox. Stop scrolling, uninstall the social media apps, and limit yourself to reading the news once s day. Instead, focus on other ways to occupy your time and stay in touch with your loved ones. Catch up with a friend over the phone with a cup of coffee, go for a walk and immerse yourself in nature, or just flick through some old photo albums and relive those happy times in your life.

Declutter Your Environment

You’ve probably noticed a lot of people are taking this time at home as an opportunity to have a good clear out. And it’s a great idea! Spend some time organising all the bits and bobs, sorting out that cupboard you’ve never been brave enough to look at, and generally marvelling at just how much stuff you’ve accumulated in your home. Don’t worry – we all do it! But while you’re spending time in your home it’s important to create an environment that feels good to you, and that you’re happy to be in. So channel your inner Marie Kondo and give your house a good tidying up!

Discover Your Happy Music

Music has a really big influence on your mood – whether you realise it or not. We all have those songs we can’t help but sing along to, and that bring a smile to our face within the first few bars. Build yourself a playlist full of all those uplifting, happy tunes, and blast them nice and loud whenever you’re feeling a bit low. If you’re stuck for ideas, most music streaming services will have playlists themed around songs, moods or places, so we’re sure you’ll be able to find something to lift your spirits.

Take a Break

Just sit. Relax. Meditate. Do yoga. Allow yourself some time to process your thoughts and feelings, and get back in touch with how your body and mind are feeling. Give yourself space and time to experience silence, relax your body and just have some time to yourself – even if it’s only 15 minutes a day. Believe us, 15 minutes of yoga can do the world of good!
