4 months in the property industry - An apprentice's perspective




Four months ago, I started working for Northwood Sales and Lettings Estate Agents in Southville, Bristol. It was a big change for me. It meant moving into a full-time job with regular hours and being based near the centre of the city. It’s a lot different from the quiet town of Thornbury I’d been used to on the outskirts of Bristol. I knew it was going to be a big commitment, but I felt ready to take the first step into my career as their Marketing Apprentice.

Why I decided to work for Northwood

The thought of working within a property industry has always intrigued me. Northwood offers a great opportunity for me to work for a large company that has over 80 franchise offices throughout the UK. Although it is a large company, I am part of a small, friendly team which means that it doesn’t get too overwhelming in the office.


What I do

A normal day for me consists of overseeing our social media accounts, keeping up to date with any events going on both inside and outside of the business and creating engaging content which will essentially promote the business. As well as this, I am involved in the everyday office admin such as answering the phones and booking in appointments. These tasks are essential for functioning as part of a team to help everything in the office run smoothly.

I also help to market any properties that we have on the market. This involves taking photos of any new properties or properties that need updated photos as well as writing the descriptions in order to advertise any property to the utmost of its potential.


What I have loved most

Since starting the job I have most enjoyed getting to explore new areas of Bristol and the street in which I work on. North Street is filled with lots of people from different social and cultural backgrounds many of which I get to meet on a regular basis. I quickly became used to the friendly faces of regular contractors, landlords, tenants and even the window cleaner. I was humbled by the welcoming atmosphere that the office provided where people felt that they could always have a warm tea or coffee accompanied by a chat at any time of the day.


What surprised me about Northwood?

The thing that surprised me most about Northwood is how different they are to any other estate agents I had seen. Everyone I work with is down to earth and takes a lot of pride in their customer service which differs from other agents I have experienced, as a tenant myself, who can sometimes come across pretentious and stubborn. Northwood really do put their customers first and work undoubtedly hard to make sure that every decision made is just and fair for both landlords and tenants.


What I’ve learnt

I have learnt so much over the past 4 months at Northwood about both the property industry and the marketing industry. Working here has taught me how to manage my time, prioritise my tasks and how to analyse my work in order to make sure all tasks are carried out are worthwhile and accomplished to the best of my ability.
