Top tips for moving house with kids

January 24, 2017

Most adults that have experienced moving house are agreed that is one of the single most stressful things they have had to do. With sorting and packing, cleaning the house you are leaving and organising things like utilities changing over,  so if you’re a parent it can be easy to overlook the fact that the kids might be finding it hard too. They may not have the stresses and strains of the practicalities, but they may well be feeling unsettled about the change. With these top tips for moving with children, you can ensure your move is as happy and stress-free as possible, not just for them, but for you too!

Explore the New Area

If at all possible, explore the new area as a family. Visit parks and playgrounds, leisure centres and any other local attractions. This will give the kids something to be excited about and look forward to.

Include them in Decisions

Including the kids in decisions where possible will make them feel involved and therefore more in control. They will feel that moving is something they are part of, not something that is happening to them.

Create a New Home Wish-list

This is something the whole family can do together. Make a wish-list of all the things you would like in the new place, for the kids this could be anything from a new swing-set in the garden to choosing new wallpaper for their bedroom.

Create Special Moving Boxes

Allow the kids to put together a box of containing a few special bits and bobs that they can take with them on the journey. These things will also then be immediately on hand when they get to the new house! Letting them decorate the packing boxes is also a great way to keep them entertained while you pack.

Get the Professionals In

It may seem like an added expense at an already expensive time, but you really can’t put a price on the time and stress that getting in professional movers saves. If possible keeping the kids out of the house on move day – unless they are old enough to be genuinely helpful – will significantly reduce anxiety levels.

Settling In

With the physical move done, all that remains is to settle the kids into their new home. Night-lights for younger children are a great idea. Things like creating a treasure map to explore the garden will keep them entertained, excited and looking at exploring their new home as an adventure!
