HMRC names and shames landlord tax defaulters

HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) has named and shamed four landlords on the latest list of tax defaulters.

Between them, the property people owe the tax man £168,000 in penalties and £152,169 in tax for the 2010 to 2012 tax years.

The offenders are:

  • P Munroe of Harrow Road, London who owes £23,177 in penalties and £55,277 tax from property letting
  • Charles and Patricia Clarke of Westdale Gardens, Holt Road, Bradford-on-Avon, Wiltshire, owing £11,851 in penalties and £26,031 in tax. HMRC says the amounts due are from nursery and commercial letting
  • L Parsons of College Road, Cheshunt, Hertfordshire, owing penalties of £17,356 and £41,325 in tax from property letting
  • Lewis Boyd, of Kyle Street, Ayr, owing penalties totalling £14,954 and tax of £29,536 from restaurant and property income

The only previous landlord to appear on the list was Paul Johal, of Wolverhampton Road, Oldbury,
West Midlands. He owed HMRC £168,000 in penalties and £240,000 in tax for the 2012 tax year.

HMRC has strict rules about publishing the names and financial details of tax defaulters.

?These are people who have received penalties for either deliberate errors in their tax returns or deliberately failing to comply with their tax obligations,’ says HMRC.

HMRC is only allowed to publish the information after completing a tax investigation and final penalties for defaulting on tax payments are imposed and the penalties amount of tax due is worth more than £25,000.

The four landlords were among 25 defaulters named on the latest list published on May 20, 2014.

Johal was put on the list in November 2013.

The current default list names 73 taxpayers.
